Pope Francis smiles as he arrives to lead his general audience in St. Peter's Square at the Vatican.
The media loves to quote Pope Francis. Let's face it, he is very quotable. The problem is that certain things he says get a lot of play and nobody gets to hear the most powerful insights that are a little less interesting to the secular media.

Pope Francis is helping us focus on elements of the Gospel that we may not have considered for a while. As a pastor, he challenges me to help my people have a direct encounter with Jesus Christ. As baptized followers of Jesus, he challenges all of us to be authentic witnesses of Jesus's message to the world. In honor of his first anniversary as the successor of St. Peter, I have compiled some of my favorite quotes from him. These may not be on the evening news, but I hope they will broadcast from us in the way we live. Enjoy 5 great quotes from Pope Francis.

1. The Church is NOT a Non-governmental Organization (NGO). - "Our Lady also wants to bring the great gift of Jesus to us, to us all; and with him she brings us his love, his peace, and his joy. In this, the Church is like Mary: the Church is not a shop, she is not a humanitarian agency, the Church is not an NGO. The Church is sent to bring Christ and his Gospel to all. She does not bring herself -whether small or great, strong or weak, the Church carries Jesus and should be like Mary when she went to visit Elizabeth. What did Mary take to her? Jesus." (General Audience Oct 23, 2013)

2. Jesus spoke primarily to the poor. - "The proclamation of the Gospel is destined primarily to the poor, to those who often lack the essentials for a decent life. The good news is first announced to them, that God loves them before all others and comes to visit them through the acts of charity that the disciples of Christ carry out in his name." (Pope Francis opens Rome Diocese Annual Convention June 18, 2013)

3. How to be a good priest. - "This I ask you: be shepherds, with the 'odor of the sheep,' make it real, as shepherds among your flock, fishers of men." (Chrism Mass Homily, March 28, 2013)

4. We must be joyful. - "Christians cannot be pessimists! They do not look like someone in constant mourning. If we are truly in love with Christ and if we sense how much he loves us, our heart will 'light up' with a joy that spreads to everyone around us. (World Youth Day, Aparecida, Brazil July 24, 2013)

5. Three things to say [in marriage]. - "Living together is an art, a patient, beautiful, fascinating journey. It does not end once you have won each other's love. Rather, it is precisely there where it begins! This journey of every day has a few rules that can be summed up in three phrases which you already said, phrases which I have already repeated many times to families, and which you have already learned to use among yourselves: May I - that is, 'can I', you said - 'thank you,' and 'I'm sorry.'" (To Engaged Couples Preparing For Marriage, February 14, 2014)
